Fishing

The grounds of Castlecomer Discovery Park are centered around two rainbow trout fishing lakes. Originally constructed by the Prior Wandesforde family, the two man-made lakes formed a centerpiece for the demesne. The lakes are now fully re-instated with angling stands to allow full access to the water and a series of cascades link the lakes and channel the water back into the River Deen.

The lower lake is reserved for fly fishing and the upper lake for bait fishing. Both lakes are stocked with rainbow trout varying in size from 2lbs to 15 lbs (1 to 7 kilograms) in weight. All fish feed naturally after being introduced to the waters. They are never artificially fed, but grow well from the abundance of natural feed from the insect and fly life in the environs.

There is a charge of €15 for four hours angling.  In general we strongly support a catch and release policy. On a 4 hour permit an angler can keep two fish up to 3lbs in weight. All adult fish are on a catch and release basis only. Once the bag limit has been taken the angler can continue to fish on a catch and release basis for the remainder of the time allocated.

Bait and flies can be purchased on site and rod hire is also available at a charge of €5 per rod with a €15 refundable deposit.
