
This trail, also known as the Explorers trail, begins in the Estate Yard and follows a loop through the woodlands, while stopping at 10 points along the way. Interpretative signage at those points explores the Ecology, Geology and History of the area and relates each topic back to the information presented in the Footprints in Coal experience.

Stop 4: Beside High Tea Sculpture – Woodland Species and Carboniferous Invertebrates
Stop 5: Overlooking Fly Lake Beside large Oak Tree – Native Irish Trees, Carboniferous Plants and the history of the lakes
Stop 6: Cave Beside Wolf sculpture – Woodland and Lakeshore species and the Caves
Stop 7: Between Rock Waterfall and Marsh – Water Species, Carboniferous life and Horse Pond
Stop 8: Open Woodland at Wet Ditch – Woodland Species and Plant Evolution
Stop 9: Picnic Area on Upper Road – Reptiles and Early Reptiles
Stop 10: The Walled Garden – Woodland Animals, and the Kitchen Garden
