Here comes the summer! Active fun for all ages as Castlecomer Discovery Park launches summer season.
From this weekend (30 June 2018) Castlecomer Discovery Park will be open every day for the summer holidays. This year visitors can still enjoy the 80 acres of stunning woodland and lakes , adventure activities including tree top walks, Ireland’s longest zip wire and high ropes challenge, climbing walls, boating, archery, adventure playgrounds, woodland café and orienteering.
But watch out for more as this season will see lots of new activity at the park. For our younger visitors we have a completely new activity, a net play area located near the popular junior woodland adventure course which will open 7th July. Kids will love to play under a covered giant net area where they can bounce to their hearts content. Then it’s over to the Junior woodland adventure course which is a series of low-risk challenges where children balance and steer their way through a Junior Woodland Adventure Course, all situated inside a stunning, natural environment that’s second to none.
For parents and children, the elf and fairy village has always a huge draw but this year we have delicious refreshments available at the Canopy Café. For coffee lovers we serve a delicious blend of coffee called 1938. 1938 is a 100% Arabica blend with a hint more of roasted character to it. We also serve hot snacks and French fries, as well as daily specials. Ice creams, pastries, scones and assortment of cold drinks is also on offer.
This summer we will also be hosting two summer camps and a host of family friendly events such as “Super Hero Training” and “Teddy Bear’s Adventure Day Out”.
There is something here for all ages, and we are especially proud to home IRELAND’S LONGEST ZIP WIRE! Now that is something to tick off the bucket list. It’s over 300 metres long and over 35 metres over ground at its highest point. A thrilling outdoor activity the Zip Line is accompanied by two high-ropes courses called the Octagonal High Ropes Challenge. These are set in high in the woodlands with views over our two lakes.
Visit our Tree Top Walk course nestled in the Sycamore tree tops! This stunning tree top walk is 140 metre long and gives views around the 70 acre natural woodland park. Or if you want to try something a little less daunting, why not reach new heights on our great outdoor climbing wall, with varying levels for all the family to enjoy.
Teaching children to become more active and to discover and play for themselves is important for all ages, so Castlecomer also caters for younger children, with a playground, an elf and fairy village,
We’ve got something for everyone, with 6km of walking trails, woodland orienteering trails, pedal boats, canoes, our fascinating interactive coal mining exhibition telling the story of the local mining heritage. Then take a walk around the craft yard, where you can meet the craft makers and find a novel gift. Located just over 90 minutes south of Dublin, the Castlecomer Experience in Kilkenny is a treat for the entire family.
We are a not for profit social enterprise…
This ‘young’ park is continuously evolving to ensure that the rich cultural heritage bequeathed through the work of the miners and Captain Wandesforde is commemorated. Preserving the character of the old buildings and developing the former ‘Leisure Park’ to a multi activity woodland park for ‘all to enjoy’ is a key element for the vision of the park – and more than just a tag line in our logo!
The park is a social/community enterprise operating on a Non Profit basis. It’s supported by volunteers from the local community, and governed by a board of voluntary directors. Any profit is re-directed to developing the park.
